Project: IRON MERCHANT CHALLENGE DISPLAY POD REINVENTION
►Project description
-
Each year Visual Merchandising Store Design (VMSD) hosts its International Retail Design Conference (IRDC).
In 2021, IRDC organizers reached out to Axis Display Group for help reimagining a key element to their Denver event - the Iron Merchant Challenge.
This interactive networking event, put on by creative powerhouse Zen Genius, Inc., is a mashup of “improvisation, creativity, and design science.” Randomly assembled teams of event attendees are given 60 minutes to decorate display pods according to a design theme not revealed until the event begins. Participants receive a hodgepodge of materials - think glitter, glue guns, spray paint, cotton balls, and more! - plus a secret ingredient they must incorporate into their designs. At the end of the 60 minutes each team reveals their creation and walks onlookers through the design narrative. Everyone casts a vote for their favorite display pod and the responsible team reigns winner until the next year!
►The
ask
-
Because these Iron Merchant display pods take on a considerable amount of damage during the event, historically, their designs have remained simple, inexpensive, and single-use.
Desiring to move away from single-use solutions and achieve a more polished aesthetic, VMSD reached out to AXIS to work up some solutions based on the following objectives. It was also requested that the display pods include a fabric backdrop and clear plexiglass/acrylic panels that can be replaced each year. AXIS was given free rein to explore materials and footprint.
Reusable
Lightweight
Durable and stable, yet mobile
Easy to pack, setup, and break down
Cost-effective
More efficient shipping option(s)
►The
process
-
As three-time participants of the Iron Merchant Challenge ourselves, AXIS knew what it would take to make these display pods go the mile.
Our 3D Design department worked up a handful of variations for VMSD to consider, each ranked against a Design Icon - Ease of Setup, Stability, Mobility, Shipping/Weight, and Cost.
►The Winning Design
-
Ultimately, VMSD selected the “Storefront” concept, appreciating its sleek design, durable materials, and similarity to a true storefront window display.
